Investment Management in Highlands

We pick, watch and adjust your investments with one question in mind: what does this cost to own over ten or twenty years? Fees, taxes and trading add up quietly. We keep them in view so your portfolio works toward your goals.

What investment management covers

Investment management means running your portfolio week in and week out. We decide what to own and in what amounts, then keep an eye on it and adjust when your circumstances or the markets change. The daily choices come off your plate. You still understand what you hold and the reason for each piece.

A lot of people size up an investment by last year's return. We look at the full price of owning it. A fund with a slightly higher annual fee can cost a great deal more over twenty or thirty years. Heavy trading can bring tax bills nobody budgeted for. A low-fee option that needs a lot of babysitting may cost more once you count the upkeep. We sort through all of that before buying, so the decisions hold up down the road.

Clients can sit down with us in our office or talk by phone or video, whichever is easier for them.

What you get

A review of your current holdings

We read through each account one position at a time. You'll see the yearly cost of every holding and where funds double up on the same stocks.

An allocation built around your goals

We split your money among stocks, bonds and cash by looking at your timeline and how much ups and downs bother you. Money you'll spend in three years gets handled differently from money meant for twenty years out.

An eye on fees and taxes

We check expense ratios and trading costs, and we think about which account each holding should live in. Some investments fit better inside a retirement account than a taxable one. Our Tax Management service covers this in more depth.

Rebalancing

Over time, gains and losses pull a portfolio away from its targets. We reset it on a schedule or when the drift gets too wide, and we don't trade for the sake of looking active.

Clear updates

Our reports tell you what changed, what it cost and the reason behind it, in words you won't need to search for.

Signs it may be time for help

  • Your fees are a mystery

If you can't name what your funds charge each year, the figure may be bigger than you'd guess. You pay it every year, good market or bad.

  • Your accounts are spread around

An old workplace 401(k), an IRA you opened years ago, a separate brokerage account. Split up like that, they're tough to run as one plan and easy to lose track of.

  • The news drives your trades

Selling after a rough week tends to lock in losses and can add a tax bill. A written plan makes it easier to stay put when staying put is right.

  • Something big just happened

Selling a business, receiving an inheritance or getting close to retirement. Changes like these usually mean your old mix needs a fresh look.

  • It eats up your evenings

Some people like managing their own investments. If yours has turned into a task you keep pushing off, it's worth talking it through.

Our process, step by step

  1. 1

    A first conversation

We get together in our office or over a call to hear about your goals, your timeline and your current accounts. Ask us anything. We lay out how we work and how we get paid.

  2. 2

    Written recommendation

We dig into your statements and return with a plan on paper. It spells out the mix we'd suggest, the cost to hold it and the first changes we'd make.

  3. 3

    Making the changes

With your go-ahead, we carry out the plan. If selling something would mean a big tax hit, we may spread the move over time.

  4. 4

    Regular reviews

We monitor your portfolio, rebalance when needed and meet with you on the schedule we set. If your goals change, we adjust the plan to match.

What sets the price

How we get paid comes up in the first meeting, before you sign anything. The fee follows the size and makeup of the work. We want you to see the whole cost up front, not discover it months later on a statement.

Assets we oversee
The total value of the accounts in our care tends to drive the fee more than anything else.
How many accounts, and what kind
A single rollover IRA takes less work than a spread of retirement, brokerage, trust and business accounts. Each extra account adds coordination and paperwork.
Tax knots to untie
Big built-up gains, a large stake in one company's stock or business income all call for more careful planning.
Planning beyond the portfolio
Some clients want only their investments handled. Others add Retirement Planning or Financial Planning, and the wider scope changes the cost.

Investment management questions we hear

Something not covered here? (732) 931-2706

Will you promise me a set return?

No. Be wary of anyone who does. Markets rise and fall on their own schedule. The parts we can steer are the mix, the fees and the tax drag, and over many years those add up.

Must every account come over at once?

No. We usually begin with whatever needs the most work. Later we'll give you a straight answer on whether bringing the rest together is worth it for you.

Is switching out of my current funds going to trigger taxes?

In a taxable account, it can. Before we sell anything, we look at the gain sitting in each position. Sometimes the smarter move is to hold a fund and build the rest of the portfolio around it.

How often do we meet?

We agree on a review rhythm at the start, often a few times a year. If something big happens between reviews, call us during business hours and we'll set up a time. Plenty of clients in Highlands, Red Bank and Middletown handle routine reviews by video.

Who decides on major changes?

You. We make recommendations and explain the reasons. Nothing major happens until we've talked it over with you.
